The Walking Dead’s Show-Runner Just Spoiled a Major Cliff-Hanger from Last Week

Written by Admin on November 01 2015

VANITYFAIR.COM – When last we left the heroes of The Walking Dead, it looked like curtains for Steven Yeun’s popular character Glenn Rhee and looked equally dicey for the show’s leading man Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Whether or not you believe these two characters are actually at risk/zombie chow, show-runner Scott Gimple is here to assure you that nobody is safe on The Walking Dead this year . . . right before spoiling just how safe one character is.

“I’ll give you an absolute because I’ve been dealing with a lot of ambiguity in storytelling here in protecting the story: Rick’s hand is safe,” Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter. “You can proclaim it from the mountaintops: His hand is safe! He will be wrapping it. There will be some ointments involved.” Rick’s hand got a nasty wound on it last week, causing many to wonder if he had been bitten or scratched and would have to lose that appendage. (Comic-book fans were extra worried given an old Rick story line and a few behind-the-scenes images.) But if the hand is safe, then we can go ahead and assume Rick is safe too. He will at least live long enough to apply Neosporin to that wound. So how will he get out of this incredibly dire situation?

Well, it’s Rick. He always thinks of something. But this seemingly bulletproof status enjoyed by some of the more popular characters on The Walking Dead is beginning to wear a little thin. If, as most people are predicting, Glenn actually survives that pit of feasting zombies from last week and Rick walks away from that R.V. with both his life and his injured hand intact, then how can we believe the stakes of this universe at all? When it comes to a show about life and death, bulletproof characters are boring.

But in the same interview with T.H.R., Gimple was quick to assure viewers that no one is safe this year. “It’s a very big season. . . . We’re dropping everyone in the deep end of the pool,” Gimple said before agreeing with the interviewer that “this is a universe in which even a character like Rick Grimes can be killed off.” “Absolutely. It’s a scary thing but this is a scary show,” he said. But if Glenn and Rick both live to fight another day, can we really believe Gimple here? The Alexandria cannon fodder characters are one thing, but recognizable bodies better start dropping soon. Just as long as it’s not Daryl, Carol, Michonne, Maggie, Glenn, Rick, Judith, and oh hell. Fine. Never mind. They all can live.
